Matching Handbag and Belt
For my sister's wedding, i picked out a beautiful blue dress that I fell in love with. But when I tried it on for the first time, I thought it looked too formal and needed a few accessories to make it look a bit more festive. So I tried to find a cool belt in a contrasting color to wear with it. Unfortunately, I only have black, brown and white belts, therefore I decided to make one, and decided its color would match my hair. As a kid I had a lot of fun with my mom's vintage 60's leatherette belts and wanted to reproduce one but with real leather. The design is a wraparound shape which ties into a bow in the front. I happen to have raspberry-red leather dye, and it was the perfect color!
Then, when I began to cut the leather, I decided I also wanted to make a matching handbag, because I would have the important role of carrying the wedding rings and I needed to do so in style! The pattern is based on a leather handbag I already have, with a very simple shape. To make both pieces match, I added a bow to the top flap of the bag.

Here are a few pictures of the sewing process:
Even though hand sewing leather is time consuming and a bit tough on the hands, I absolutely love seeing the stitches come together, and it is a profoundly meditative process. I put on a documentary on ancient Rome and spent two evenings on the cutting, dying and stitching.

Did I finish the project on the day before the wedding? I might have... but it was worth it!
